Chapter 66: Unsolved

Its still Tuesday but now in the evening. Jason is back to his house on an island with Bennet and Peter . From the looks of things Peter was still grasping the fact that Jason was the Ghost of Europe. Jason was in his office thinking about his next moves. He heard a knock on the door and Bennett came in

"What's up?" Jason asked

"I just thought you needed something to drink so I brought you some coffee" Bennett said as he came closer to the table and poured Jason a freshly ground cup of coffee, "sometimes it looks painful just being you" he said as joke with a smile

"Why's that?" Jason asked him as he picked up the cup to drink

"I mean,I am nearly three times your age yet you still keep surprising me. I don't know for how long you have been doing it but you never disappoint" Bennet said

"One could almost say that my father invested my childhood on making me the brains of the family. Sending me to school early, making me learn to speak different languages,taking psychology classes at a young age. All those make the perfect recipe for a brainiac instead of a son" Jason commented

"I guess he had a good reason as to why he did that. Im guessing he saw that your IQ is higher than the average toddler's, that's why he had to make sure it doesn't go to waste " Bennett told him

"He was turning me into a weapon " Jason said

"He was moulding you to become a better person,a better child. Someone who would make a difference in the world one day. And if you ask me,I would say that he managed to make that happen" Bennett interceded

"You mean he was successful in turning me to a form of better version of the human race" Jason said mockingly

"No Jason,look at me. You built this whole enigma of the Ghost all by yourself. I mean yes you received some help but whose idea was it in the first place?" Bennett asked him though the question felt more like a rhetorical question. "I mean look around you" he continued as he pointed at the documented folders in the office," all this is you,not your father. Look at those" Bennet said as he pointed at cabinets that were at the far corner of the room

"All those cabinets are full Bennet" Jason told him

"Exactly,and do you know what is in those cabinets?" Bennett asked him

"Documents " Jason answered

"Not just documents,all those are the documents of the cases that you have solved without any dispute. Do you know what that means? All those are possible homicides, murders, suicides and rape cases that you have been able to put away. That's why you became such a sensation to many,you were the one person who delivered justice in favour of those who had been wronged. Every family going through grief looked up to you to deliver justice and you always did" Bennet went on

"But there's something that you are not looking at" Jason said as he looked into the eyes of Bennett as though he was looking for his soul

"What's that?" Bennet asked. Jason got up and went to the other side of the office where there was one cabinet. When Jason opened it Bennett could see files stacked up in rows with different file colours . But on a separate shelf still in the cabinet was just one file that was black in colour. Jason picked up the file and left the cabinet open

"You see this" Jason said as he showed Bennett the black file," this is the one case that I could never get to the bottom of it till date. All these, " Jason said as he showed him the files stacked on top of each other. The files were countless. " they are every single bit of information that I have been able to gather over the months. All the unsolved murders relating to the Serbian Slayer,I followed his trail from his very first kill to his last in Europe " Jason said as he put back the file and closed the cabinet which was lockable and had only one key to open it which only Jason got hold of. He put the key back on his table so that he could talk to Bennett

"We both know that you didn't drop that case due to selfish reasons,if it was not for the threat on Yuri you would have put the Slayer for life already " Bennet told him

"I did as I was asked and dropped the case Bennett. I agreed to put my name on the line and my reputation at jeopardy just for the wellbeing of Yuri. But despite me doing all this,he was still killed in cold blood and there was nothing I could do. Now his sons won't say it but I know that deep down they somehow blame the demise of their father. It's just that they can't say that to my face " Jason said. 

"It's not your fault that Yuri died,you can't change someone's fate in this world " Bennett told him

"But you can determine which direction someone's fate takes. Being involved with me was one sure way of directing his fate towards an early grave" Jason said

"That's it Jason. I've heard you beat yourself enough for long. You need to know one thing, Yuri wasn't a small child who didn't know what he was doing everytime he woke up and went to work with you. He knew exactly what he was involving himself in. But he did it anyways knowing the difference they made in the world. Look at Tyler and me,did you see us unwaiver in our stance beside you for a single minute since Yuri passed? This is because we both know what we are doing this for and we won't let something that comes with the job description change our decisions. So keep your head held high and don't ever think for a single day that we regret ever being part of the GOE's legacy " Bennett told him with a firm tone. Just as he said this there was a knock on the door which made them turn to see who was at the door. It was Tyler who walked in looking tired and worn out

"Peter told me I'd find you guys in here" he said as he walked in while looking at their faces. After assessing the room he spoke again before anyone else, "why do I feel like I just walked in on a very serious topic? This room has an atmosphere with so much tension you would think someone is plotting to drop an atomic bomb somewhere in Europe "

"We were just having a conversation with Jason over here about his next moves " Bennet said as he turned to Jason

"I need some more time to think about our next move" Jason said as he closed the files on his office table

"By the way,you look like you just came from teaching a kindergarten class. You look worn out, very worn out actually. I thought you just went to run an errand or something" Bennett said after looking at Tyler keenly

"I thought I was going to run an errand too,but I was actually being called for a set-up" Tyler said as he looked at Jason with rage. Bennett instinctively turned to Jason

"What's he going on about?" Bennett asked

"I don't know, I'm also wondering what could have him so mad" Jason said with a smile, "but tell me something Tyler,how was your day with Kayla?" He asked innocently

"Don't you even start with me,I've gone to get my much needed rest" Tyler said as he got up and left the room
