Chapter 64: Rejection
Jason took Kyla to one of the lounges in the building where special guests usually wait as their business is being handled. The room had very comfortable sofas with a glass table at the center. The floor was carpeted with a warm fluffy carpet that covered edge to edge. On the wall there was a flat screen TV that was mounted and was playing music. He asked her to seat as he went out and came back about five minutes later with some French fries and some sodas. The only people in the room were Jason and Kayla since the agency had put aside all the other businesses and focused on the Magraff's case
"I thought we were going out of the building?"Kayla asked as she took the fries from Jason
"That was the idea, but then I realized before we check out and get a place we would've wasted nearly twenty or thirty minutes of which I have desperately asked Alpha to grant you for your break. So I thought why not improvise? The food is already available in the cafeteria and the entertainment is in this lounge. A perfect simulation of a restaurant." Jason said as he handed her a few packets of ketchup
"You sure do think fast" Kayla commented
"It comes with the job" Jason replied with a smile
"By the way, I barely know anything about you" Kayla said
"What do you want to know?" He asked
"Before we go to any personal questions, I'm still wondering how you got yourself a promotion to work in the same office with Athena" she said
"I still wonder about that too, but it has something to do with the Magraff case. Mostly, I'm helping them out with the sorting of files and some other works here and there" Jason told her
"Sounds like they needed a secretary up there" she teased
"I'm starting to see it like that too,but as long as all the small credits go to my CV,I'm good" Jason responded
"Ok then, I heard that you're from Europe, but so far I haven't heard any accent in your tone" she said
"Well I guess accents weren't just my thing" Jason replied
"Come on,you and the Krovacic brothers come from around the same place. And when they talk, that accent is heavy. So how comes you don't have one?" Kayla asked again
"Well I could say it's contributed to my upbringing?" Jason answered
"And how did that affect it?" She asked
"As I was brought up my late father took me to school to study foreign languages" Jason answered
"How many languages can you speak?" She asked
"Well at the age of ten I could speak about five different languages, so from there I kind of took it like a hobby. To be honest, right now I can't tell you how many languages I can speak" Jason answered her
"What do you mean?" She asked a little bit confused, "like you forgot the languages?"
"No, like I literally lost count of the languages that I can speak. Last time I remember counting I stopped at around 18 different languages" he answered
"What in the hell!" She exclaimed, "are you a spy or something? Because even more than two is stressful enough for me. I say that because I took Spanish in school and that was enough for me"
"I had a weird childhood, I know" Jason said
"Weird? Yours is more than that,I mean it was like you were being trained to be an assassin or something" she said
"I thought so too, but I guess it helped me since at a young age I could go almost anywhere without having much of a problem with language" Jason told her,as he finished this he pulled out his phone and asked her if he could make an urgent call which he had to make to which Kayla had no problem with. He didn't take long because after about three minutes he was back and they continued with their conversation
"Your dad was a smart man" she said
"He sure was,one of the best that I've known so far" he said as his mind wondered off into his childhood memories of his dad. All that he could remember about his father's closest friends was that he only had two main people who he would hang out. And the two friends were Yuri Krovacic and Bennett. Two figures he now looked up to with so much respect
"You mentioned that he had passed" she said
"Did I?" Jason asked
"Yes,when you referred to your father, you said late father" she said, "mind if I ask how he died?"
"It's ok,it's not like it's something private. My dad passed away as a result of cancer,he was a survivor for nearly two decades" Jason answered as he smiled at the end of his words
"Im sorry to hear, and what about your mother?" She asked. Kayla soon realized that Jason was quiet like he was avoiding the question. She couldn't tell if he was hurt or didn't just want to talk about the topic. "If you don't feel comfortable talking about, there's no need. I'm sorry if I went a bit too personal"
"I just don't talk about her" he said before changing the direction of the conversation," now about Kayla, what do I need to know about you apart from the fact that kind of have a crush on me?" He asked boldly as he looked at her while taking a bite of some fries. Kayla was taken back by his words and she couldn't hide her surprise and shock.
"You knew?" She asked still shocked
"One of my hobbies also was profiling,so yes, from the very first day. And maybe because someone also might have a slippery tongue" he answered
"Well I didn't picture this happening right now,but since you already know I guess there's no need to keep it a secret" she told him," so,what are we going to do about it?" She asked. Jason took a few seconds to think as he tried to think of any scenarios where being involved with Kayla that would end well.
"First of all,I like the fact that you literally didn't flush out on me and try to avoid the topic in any way. That means you have the balls, metaphorically speaking though" he said with a smile
"But..." She said as she watched him and waited for him to drop the bad news
"Looks like you already have this situation scouted already in your head" he joked
"Don't we all do that" she responded with a smile still waiting for him to speak up
"Like I said, I like the approach that you've taken. But the thing is I can't be involved in something that could possibly ruin a friendship that could blossom into something good. I'll be honest and say I'm not a good guy, that is a fact I know. You are a girl that any guy would be lucky to have. I mean you're smart, hardworking, beautiful but it wouldn't be fair if I take your trust and end up crushing it in the end. I can't be that guy to you,I know things will be great at the beginning but believe me when I say as time goes, things will change and with the changes,we might have a hard time holding on." Jason said as he tried his best to turn her down but with the best way possible and good intentions to why he did that
"I respect that,I mean you say that you're a bad guy but the way you just turned me down says otherwise. But since you may have your personal reasons as to why, I'll not judge rather,I'll respect it" she said with a smile
"Oh my God,did I just turn down a girl? What has become of me?" He asked himself out loud
"Don't look at me, I'm more surprised" Kyla said as she started laughing
