Chapter 45: Strongest of wills

 " Well I have to say, you have a beautiful building Alpha" Jason said

"No, you don't get it. They must have found out and gotten rid of it" Daymond said

"So you're telling us that the mayor found out that you had found his secret stash of goodies and had them erased from your email?" Djokovic asked

"Yes, but something doesn't add up. How could the mayor have known if I had sent a copy to my email?" Daymond asked himself

"How could he?" Mikhail asked no one in particular

"He didn't" Jason said

"What do you mean?" Alpha asked

"I mean, I'm guessing he didn't know if you had a copy. But just to be on the safe side, he had to confirm. The first thing that I would also do is hiring someone to comb out every aspect of your social life. Check everything from your chats with family and friends. Someone you confide in, someone you trust." Jason said

"Look for any indication of threat" Alpha said

"Exactly. They first looked up your email, your messages, your calls. Everything that you did. I'm guessing do to panick mode they looked up your email inbox but forgot to check the spam mail." Jason went on

"And what if they can't find anything there?" Mikhail asked

"They waited, it is by human nature that we are tempted to share things that we probably should not share. So they monitored your every move, listened in to every conversation that you had to pick up if you were telling anyone what you found out." Jason said

While Jason was saying this he watched Daymond to pick up any expressions because he knew what Daymond was recollecting his movements and actions that he had done after learning about the secret files.

"Where you went, who you met and what you talked about. Now tell me Mr Magraff, who did you talk to?" Jason asked

"I don't tell anyone,I swear. Not even my wife knows what I found out" Daymond said

"But you couldn't possibly resist the urge to talk to someone. A confidant who is not a must gives you the right advice, just a listening ear" Djokovic said

And that's when it dawned on Jason, he connected the small details in his head

"Oh my God" Jason said

"What? What's wrong?" Alpha asked

"I know who he talked to" Jason said as he looked at Daymond, in Daymond's eyes he could see sorrow as tears started forming and slowly dripped down his cheeks.

"Who is he talking about?" Alpha asked Daymond as he referred to Jason

"I didn't know that they were watching me, I didn't mean for anything bad to happen" Daymond spoke in a broken voice as he slowly started breaking down into sobs

"What happened Daymond?" Mikhail asked

"She was just a child,I only told her that I had found out something bad. Something that I wasn't supposed to see" Daymond said as he wiped the tears from his eyes

"You talked to your daughter, didn't you?" Alpha asked

"I didn't even tell her what I had found in detail. She was just a child, my only child. And they killed her, they killed my baby" Daymond said

"This is what you expect to come from a man who is willing to do anything to protect his name. He doesn't care whose blood will be shed, as long as he remains afloat" Jason said

"Why didn't you tell us this at first? We have been approaching it from a wrong point of view. We could start looking at this from the view that proves that the mayor was involved in your daughter's death" Mikhail said

"No we can't do that" Jason said

"Why not?" Djokovic asked

"We first need to prove that he is innocent, that should be our only priority for now" Jason answered

"But we have a chance to prove the mayor's involvement" Mikhail protested

"How exactly? All we have is a testimony from Daymond,a murderer in the eyes of the people. His evidence is somehow gone and nowhere to be seen" Jason said

"So what are you suggesting we do?" Djokovic protested

"We first prove his innocence, if we focus on the mayor we stand a risk to lose this case before we even find something solid. I'm not willing to risk this case for the sake of putting another man behind bars who can easily manipulate the system. He's already proven that he can and has no problem doing it" Jason said

"As you wish" Daymond said

"What do you think?" Mikhail asked Alpha

"Do as he says, he knows best" Alpha responded

"But I promise you this, your daughter's blood was not shed for nothing. I will get justice for her, just have some patience"Jason said

"What are you going to do?" Mikhail asked Jason

"Let me handle that, just make sure we stick to Daymond as our priority case for now. If they charge him and say he's guilty, we all know that it won't end well for him. We could be looking at an execution" Jason said

"There's no way that they can possibly execute him in Panem. The only time they can order for an execution is--" Mikhail said

"--if he is found guilty of all counts of murder and about five countries sign for the execution" Alpha picked up on that statement

"You think given the reputation of the Serbian Slayer, European countries will not sign an execution? They won't even think twice about it. As long as they ensure that their citizens can sleep peacefully at night, they won't care if he indeed is the killer." Jason said." So no matter what happens we need to make sure that he doesn't end up facing a firing squad when all this is over. You now know why he's being targeted, make sure that his daughter did not die in vain." Jason added on

"Sure thing, we'll be right on it" Mikhail said

"Now with that settled, do you guys mind escorting Mr Magraff to his car, I want to have a talk with Mr West, in private" Alpha said as he talked to the brothers

"No problem" Djokovic said as they got up and walked Mr Magraff outside.

"What do you have to talk to me about?" Jason asked

"I know that you won't tell me what's happening with you, but I need you to just tell me one thing" Alpha said

"And what's that?" Jason enquired

"Is he part of your plan?" Alpha asked referring to Mr Magraff

"Daymond? No, not really. But he is tied to it one way or another" Jason replied

"He just lost his daughter Jason, for something that he barely knows about and to make matters worse, he's being charged for the murder. So I hope you are not going to make his life any worse than it already is" Alpha said

"I will try not to, I'm still trying to figure out how he's related to my plan" Jason said

"So far what have you found out?" Alpha asked

Jason did not have to answer that question since he just gave Alpha a certain look that clearly indicated that he doesn't trust anyone with what he had planned." That look again, you know you never told me why exactly you wanted to work for me,rather,with me. How do I know that whatever you're planning isn't going to take innocent lives?" Alpha asked

"That's because I don't know that to. All I know is that I'm getting closer to succeeding in my plan every single day. I just need to find the extra missing pieces of the puzzle to see what I'm missing. But don't worry,as long as no one gets in my way, no blood will be shed, innocent blood that is. But if anyone dares to stand in my way,whether innocent or guilty,they would just be..... collateral damage" Jason said as he stood up and walked to the door

"I just hope that you won't at some point stand in my way too,the hardest of decisions require the strongest of wills" Jason said as he stood by the door and then finally walked out
