Chapter 58: Dinner With West
It was Sunday evening and Jason was in his house that was was on the private island talking to Tyler. They were drinking as Jason was making the grill.
"How do you like your barbeque? Medium rare or as long as it's edible you're good?" Jason asked as he flipped the meat on the grill
"As long as it's edible I'm good" Tyler said with a smile as he went over to the kitchen to check on the spaghetti that was cooking. On the side there was some stew that was cooking and it looked way to delicious and too tempting for anyone who set their eyes on them
"Good answer" Jason said as he flipped the meat with one hand using a spatula while drinking a diet Coke using the other hand. As he said this they both heard the front door being opened and they both knew who that would be since no one else has the permission to even come within a one kilometer radius of the island
"Eeyyyy, do my nostrils deceive me or is that a good meal that I smell?" Bennett asked from the moment he walked into the front door followed closely be Peter
"With such great cooking skills I wonder why I'm still hired to cook for you guys" Peter said as he walked into the house after Bennett
"Be careful Peter" Tyler said as he stirred the stew while taking in the sweet aroma that it was releasing
"Im just saying, you guys make this place smell like an Italian restaurant combined with Indian cuisines and spices. That's something that I haven't been able to achieve in God knows how long" Peter said as he came around the kitchen and looked at the food
"The lad is right,I'm even considering having one you around more often and send this chap on an early holiday and early retirement" Bennett said as he put down some of the things that they had brought from their shopping
"Well once in a while it can't hurt just sitting down with the people that you consider dear to you and have a good meal" Jason said as he gave Bennett a cold drink from the cooler box at his feet and went back to the grill
"So, what's the occasion today?" Bennett asked
"We just wanted to enjoy a good meal with you guys" Tyler said as he turned off all the cookers and asked Peter to help him set the table
"I've known you from the moment you were a young boy till now, there's no such thing as just a meal with friends" Bennett said as he took a sip of the drink that Jason had handed over to him
"You sound much like my father, but I'll get down to the bottom of whatever we're all here for. For now can we just enjoy a happy Sunday's meal?" Jason asked as he turned down the heat on the grill and left it covered to keep the meat warm
After setting the table all were seated apart from Tyler who was serving each individual on their plate one dish at a time. He served the spaghetti with the meat stew that was thick on the side. He finished it off with some steamed spinach on the side to balance the meal.
"You should consider opening a restaurant Tyler,it's a shame that we're the only lucky few who get to taste your food" Bennett said as he salivated by just looking at the food and being drowned by the aroma given off by the food
"I also had that thought, don't worry Bennett,I'll look into that soon enough" Tyler responded as he put the serving dishes away and joined them at the table
"Life is short Tyler, don't push any plans to far ahead. Who knows, you might not be there to see them through" Bennett said as he looked at Jason
"Why are you looking at me like that while saying that? I'm not the angel of death" Jason came to his own defense
"But you might just be an associate" Tyler said as he started digging into his food
"Am i missing out on anything? Since I feel like a fourth wheel in a tricycle" Peter asked as he looked around the table
"Can we just have one meal without making me look like I'm a devil in sheep's clothing. I asked both of you if you were in it to see me through this and you both agreed no matter the approach that I use" Jason said as he took a bite of the food while looking at both Bennett and Tyler
"That's because we were more scared of what you might have done if you had gone solo on this. Despite the fact that we agreed to help you, you still find a way to shock us with tactics that I'm sure Germany would have found helpful in world war one" Bennet said
" This food is good" a confused Peter said trying to change the course of the conversation only for him to be ignored even more
"I said any means necessary Bennett, and I'm going to go by that till the last minute" Jason said
"Sadly I think both me and Bennett believe that, that's why we are here to make sure that you don't make any obnoxious decisions" Tyler said as he dug into his food
"Both of you are helping me with a jailbreak in broad daylight where there's camera presence, don't you think that we already jumped over the obnoxious decisions bridge a long time ago?" Jason asked in more of a rhetorical way
" He does have a fair point" Peter chipped in before adding on ," and I noticed that for a meal, Tyler served us with food that looked like you were rationing it"
"I had to do that since my food is not going to be your main meal for today's dinner" Tyler said
"Then what's the main meal?" Bennett asked
"That is my surprise for today" Jason answered as he saw that nearly all of them were done with their food, "Bennet, you remember there was a case I worked that needed me to travel to Africa?" Jason asked
"Yes I do" Bennett answered, "what does that have to do with this?" He asked
"It has everything to do with this," Jason answered as he got up while Tyler followed suit and cleared the table. " The country I visited was Kenya,a very beautiful country, where I stayed for about two months. You will be surprised what one can learn in just two months"
"Oh really, what did you learn?" Bennett asked
"In Kenya they have their own version of home made cake, they call it ugali, cooked using maize flour and water. A very simple process, boil water, add the flour while the water is still boiling and stir with a flat wooden spoon they call a mwiko until it becomes harder than dough. Once it's good and firm you leave it for about three minutes to cook well and it's ready to be eaten" Jason said as he brought out the already cooked Ugali and put it on a tray on the table.
"It smells good" Peter said
"That's not all I learnt, I came to know what we call a barbeque they call it nyama choma which translates to roasted meat in English. So I took the liberty to make you some nyama choma just how they do it in Kenya, roasted over a grill without adding any spices or anything else apart from salt. But that's not all,see the roasted meat isn't eaten with Ugali alone." Jason said as he chopped up the meat into smaller chunks that were easy to eat, after serving them he pulled out a small container and poured the contents into each individual's plate. " What you're looking at is chopped up onions and tomatoes, they can't miss in this meal. But for the sake of wondering what you will call it,just say kachumbari. It's a banger and can't miss. Now dig in and tell me what you think" Jason said as he sat next to them ready to start eating.
