Chapter 63: A Break

 Its Tuesday and Jason walks into the building where he is welcomed by Kayla's sweet smile. Instinctively,he changes his direction and goes to where she is. He can clearly see the excitement visibly showing on her face as he approaches.

"Good morning West" she said with a smile, " or do you prefer Jason?"

"Any can do babygirl" he replied with his deep voice and a smile that instantly made Kayla blush. He leaned over the desk, "by the way, how're you doing? It's been a while since we actually sat down and talked. Actually,I don't think we've ever sat down and talked"

"Are you ok? Or is this some kind of prank?" She asked as she looked around trying to spot any suspicious activity but she saw none

"Come on,you really think I'd pull a prank like that on you? I'm serious,I don't see anything wrong with hanging out with a colleague just to know them better" Jason said with his smile still on his face

"Well I guess that can't be bad but you know that this week will be one of the busiest for this agency" she said as she showed him a stack of files on her desk

"I see that,how about this,I get a lunch with you and in return I'll help you with the files. I'm not even sure what you are supposed to do but I'm sure I can give you a hand" Jason told her

"That's a tempting offer but--"

"Come on,don't tell me you are willing to turn down a helping hand. Besides,I'm only asking for one lunch with you," Jason cut her short

"Well ok,as long as you fulfil your end of the bargain I'm good with that. Now the only problem is, convincing him" Kayla said as she pointed to Alpha who was busy talking to some other employees about something

"Why don't we find out if he has any problem with that" Jason said just before he started walking towards Alpha's direction. When Alpha saw him he smiled like he wanted to tell him something but didn't know where to find him

"Jason,just the person I'm looking for" he said as he shook his hand

"You seem happier to see me than I am to see you" Jason said confused

"Well that's because I wanted you to please tell these guys where the files are that contain all the information that we need to take to the court as evidence" Alpha told him

"And who are they?" Jason asked

"Well they are out handlers,you can trust them with the files Jason. These are they guys who deliver the files. It's literally their job" Alpha said as Jason looked the guys Alpha was referring to. One was a man and the other a woman. They had the company's name tag on them which had their name and role in the agency

"If you say so," Jason said before turning to the handlers, "I'm sure you know Athena's office, you will find the documents on my table,they are quite a number but there's one that is in a blue file,that's a very crucial document. Guard it with your life,in it stands the fate of the judgement that the court will deliver. All the rest are merely complimentary documents" Jason turned and told them to which they headed off to go and get them. He then turned to Alpha with a smile

"I don't know why you are looking at me like that but I'm sure I don't like what it's about" Alpha said as he started walking away since he knew that whatever Jason could be thinking about was not good

"Oh come on,you haven't even heard what I want to say" Jason said as he walked by his side

"Anytime that those wheels in you head start spinning something bad comes out of it" Alpha told him

"Well this one is not something to be considered as crazy" Jason said

"Ok, let me hear it" Alpha said as he stopped and faced him

"Im only asking for a small favor,you see Kayla over there?" He asked as he pointed towards Kayla who was engrossed with her work

"Yes I do" Alpha answered quite unsure of what Jason was going to come up with this time

"All I'm asking is that you give her a break, about an hours break. Just a little break to get her mind of work for a while,I won't ask for much" Jason said as he looked at Alpha

"Im sure her lunch break is enough,besides she looks like she has a lot of work so a break won't do her much good. I'm sure you know that this week everyone is working to the bone especially the guys at the front desk who need to sort out all the work and filter it just so that we can run things smoothly" Alpha told Jason

"I know,everyone keeps telling me that. But don't you think she's been receiving most of the work just because she has a spotless track record. If you keep running her on her energy reserves she will soon tire out and I'm sure you can't have such a situation in your hand, especially at this time" Jason reasoned. Alpha looked keenly at Kayla and then at Jason as he tried to put some pieces together in his head

"What's in it for you?" He asked

"What do you mean?" Jason asked a bit taken back

" I know you Jason,you don't do anything without any reason. So what's in it for you?" Alpha asked again

"There's nothing in it for me,I literally don't stand to gain anything from this. I'm just looking out for a friend" Jason answered

"No matter what you say I know that there's a reason behind this, I just don't know what I'm sure I don't even want to know why. I just have one request for you" Alpha said

"And what's that?" Jason asked

"Whatever you do, please try not to bring any of my employees any harm whatsoever. I know this is part of this whole plan of yours so I'll allow her to get her break,only because you proved a good point" Alpha said to Jason

"One thing that I can promise is that I won't bring any harm to any of your employees,but as long as they don't stand in my way. If they do,I can't assure you of their safety once they cross that bridge. Secondly, thank you for granting that request "Jason said with a stern look on his face

"Just make sure that when she is back she will continue with her work since you just proved to me that she is an essential asset to me" Alpha told him

"One last thing before I forget" Jason said as he was just about to walk back to Kayla, " the thing about not trusting me,I like it that way. I barely trust my own shadow so no harm done." With this Jason went back to Kayla with a smile broader than before

"Well you look happier than before,and that took longer that expected. Let me guess,he gave you a speech on how I already have a break blah blah blah" she said as she laughed

"Yes he did,he actually said how you are fully booked for the week till Friday and how a break isn't a good idea and all that stuff" Jason said as he went along with her vibe, "let's go,shall we?" He asked her

"Go where? Didn't Alpha just give you enough reasons as to why I should be behind this desk and not taking a break?" She asked him genuinely confused

"Yes he did, but what makes you think that he didn't allow you to get a break? Now get up from that chair and let's go and spend your break doing something meaningful" Jason said with a smile
