Chapter 67: Thursday

 It's Thursday morning and LA associates looks like a beehive with everyone on their toes trying to meet their set deadlines. Jason walks through the front door and walks straight to the reception desk where the workload is visible as files are stacked on top of each other. When Kayla sees Jason she welcomes him with a warm smile as she continues trying to sort some stuff out

"Busy morning I see" Jason says as he gets to the desk

"You don't say,I feel like my head is going to explode" she says as she goes on with her work

"It looks like you have your hands tied and I wouldn't want to be a hindrance since I'm sure everyone is walking on thin ice " Jason said as he was about to turn around

"Don't worry about me,I could do this with my eyes closed. What did you want to talk about?" She asked

"Well I wanted to know if Tyler helped you as I hoped" Jason said

"Oh yes, quite a gentleman so to speak. He helped me on Tuesday and even yesterday. Actually, these files that I'm trying to sort out,he's the one who helped me to get them in order with every single document in the right file" she said as she was putting the files away

"I knew he wouldn't disappoint. By the way,aren't all these to many files from just one case?" He asked

"You don't know?" She asked as she looked at him curiously

"Know what?" H asked back

"LA is not just handling the Magraff's case tomorrow, we're also representing someone by the name...." She said as she scuffled through the files trying to retrieve one of them. After a while she pulled out the file and had the look that a magician usually has on their face when they pull a disappearing trick." Here we go" she said as she opened the file, "he is a guy by the name Hunters. Apparently he is being charged for possession of illegal drugs" 

"Hunter?" Jason asked more of like a confirmation question

"Yes,do you know him?" She asked him

"No,not really. The name doesn't ring a bell. Who is going to represent him?" He asked

"Well the case has been sidelined if you ask me. It's been given to one of the upcoming lawyers in the firm. But the evidence is clearly in favor of the law so it's like we are going to a gunfight with a penknife " she said as she looked at the file before putting it back with the rest 

"Well at least he won't be going in alone. Maybe he'll plead guilty and make the judgement lenient on his side" Jason said as he looked at her

"I swear tomorrow feels like we are going to a slaughter " she exclaimed with a sigh

"You can feel it too?" He asked her

"Of course,like the Hunters case,and now Magraff. It's like we are the rebels and we are going against the state on all fronts" she said

"I'm sure the day will go as planned at least " he said with some of the words referring to his actual plans for Friday, "anyways,I bet I have to go and check up on what Athena has for me before she forwards an eviction notice to Alpha" he said with a smile

"I almost forgot you're also caught up in this whole work saga. Just don't be burned out before tomorrow, remember,all eyes will be at the courthouse " she said as he was turning to leave

"I will try my best to survive the day. And about all eyes on the courthouse,I'm banking on that " Jason said before saying the last words to himself such that Kayla couldn't hear him

He walked to the lift where he met Marla waiting to go to the next floor. Being the only two people in the lift he immediately pressed the doors to close before anyone else would hop in. As soon as the doors closed he turned and gave her a passionate hug with a follow up kiss

"Keeping this between us in the office will be harder than it seems" she said as they broke the embrace 

"But we can manage it long enough to perfect it. Anyways, where are you off to?" He asked

"Alpha asked me to come to your office and take the copies of the evidence in the Magraff's case to his office. Which is why I'm glad that I bumped into you " she answered him

"How about this,I'll deliver them to him personally. You can run free and be relieved from this duty" he told her as he used a voice imitating Alpha which made Marla laugh

"Are you sure?" She asked

"Yes,I have something I need to discuss with him so why should you stress yourself" he said as the lift opened it's doors on the floor where Jason's office with Athena was. Just then Jason received a text on his phone as they started walking towards the office. He immediately turned to Marla giving her a look that showed that he wanted something from her

"What?" She asked as they got to the door

"I'll take the files to Alpha but it turns out that he's not the only one who wants the copies " he said as they entered the office and found Athena on her desk working on something.

"Who else wants them?" She asked just after they both said hi to Athena

"The Krovacic brothers, please can you take the files to them?" He pleaded with her

"Fine, where are they?" She asked

" In the lounge room" he said as he handed over some of the documents to her. She looked at the four or five files that he gave her and looked back at Jason curiously

"This is it? It's barely anything compared to the ones I've seen Kayla and her group sort" she said as she shook them weightlessly

"The ones downstairs and the ones presented to the court are the actual testimonials, witness accounts, dates, proof of alibi and all that in detail. What you're holding is like a user's manual on how to approach the defence panel actually. In general it's a break down of everything in just a few pieces of paper" Jason said. He then noticed that she looked at him like she was wondering how he knew so much yet he was still a newbie. So without even speaking he knew what she was about to ask. He decided to jump the bullet and speak before she had the chance to ask. "I've been filling them since day one, that's how I know that" he said with an innocent look on his face

"You sure do have to know what exactly you are doing in this line of work that you actually find yourself at one with the work" Athena said as she had been overhearing what they were talking about

"That's so true" Jason said as Marla was turning to leave as her question had been answered. As soon as she left Jason started going through the files on his desk like he was looking for something. Athena noticed this and after realizing that whatever Jason was looking for was not on the desk she just had to interfere 

"Ok, what are you looking for with that much energy?" She asked

"There was a special folder here,I don't know if someone might have picked it" he said as he went on searching

"The only people who have been here were those guys delivering the evidence to court. They mentioned a special folder or something like that " Athena said

"So you heard them saying something about a file that was very crucial?" Jason asked as he stopped searching 

"Yes, don't you remember telling them about it?" She asked him while trying to jog his memory

"With the amount of pressure I'm guessing that I forgot"Jason said as he sank into his chair
