Chapter 73: Getting Hunters
Hunters was in the back of the van when it started heading back to the prison. He could hear the loud crowds as they were exiting the courthouse. He also heard the prison transport guards complain over the comms about how they were picked for this job while they wanted to stay and watch the court hearing of the Serbian Slayer.
Meanwhile, for Peter, Bennet and Tyler, things were completely different. The grounds were now shifting and they had to shift with it. With every passing minute, they got closer to their target area. About five minutes out, they made sure that their sidearms were working well as they followed the van closely behind. At the front was the other prison escort that led the way. It flashed red and blue lights as it went down the streets. Not that anyone paid attention because all eye were glued on the TV's across Sin City and Panem.
The three men confirmed whether the comms also worked well.
"Can you guys hear me?" Jason asked as he stood in the hallway of the courthouse while the rest of the LA team arrived. They came in under very high security considering what happened last time. The crowds were anxious and people could tell that there was a tense moment when Daymond arrived at the courthouse entrance. They waited in silence. But this time, nothing happened. No attack unleashed again upon them. They all had held a breath and once he was inside the courthouse building, breathed a sigh of relief.
"Loud and clear" all the three men responded simultaneously
"Where are you?" Jason asked
"About five minutes out. What's happening on your side? I can hear a lot of noise and commotion " Bennet asked
" Magraff has walked into the building, all eyes are on this case. So, whatever you'll do, make sure it's fast such that by the time people realize what's happening you're out of there " Jason instructed as he watched Alpha, Athena and the Krovaçic brothers walk Daymond down the hallway into the courtroom. Since he wasn't supposed to be seen by the public eye as person of interest in the case, he kept his distance and acted like he didn't know any of them.
"Just stay on the comms, incase of an emergency" Tyler told him
As Tyler was saying this, Jason saw Gallows walk together with Ray. They both had broad smiles on their faces. He was certain that they were enjoying the day so far since Hunters had gotten his sentence and here they were going to see Daymond gets his fair share of it too. He couldn't help but smile at this thought. If only they knew what was coming their way. They got closer and even Gallows had the audacity to approach him when he recognized his face. Jason tried his best to put a genuine smile on his face when he got to where he stood. With an outstretched hand, Gallows offered his hand for a handshake.
"You're here! I didn't know that" Gallows said," this is the lad I was telling you about " he went on as he addressed Ray
" Of course I'm here, I can't miss this for the world" Jason responded trying his best to sound enthusiastic. Deep down he wanted to beat the hell out of both these men. He looked at Ray with a poker face as he remembered that Ray was the one who sent out three men to kill him. Of course Ray didn't know who was standing in front of him. Except for the brief profiling that had been done by his team.
"Nice to meet you young man" Ray said hastily as they both got called to the side by a group of reporters.
"Jason, I know exactly what you're thinking. And now is not the time nor the place" Bennet talked to Jason over the earpiece. He knew very well how enraged Jason was especially because those two men orchestrated the attack and not only that, they put the life of Marla at risk.
"Listen to the old man Jason" Tyler added on knowing that Jason couldn't respond due to the large crowd that was gathering inside the hallway. The could all hear Jason's breathing start to cool down. He was taking short but deep breaths like an enraged bull ready to blow a fuse.
A few minutes passed and all was set. The moment of truth had finally arrived. They were just coming up the Sin City Park Avenue. With a confirmation from Tyler who could see them through the scope of his lense, they were all ready. They waited for the first shot so that the raid could begin.
"Where are you exactly?" Bennet asked
"You see the tall building in the distance in front of you?" Tyler asked
" Yes, the one that's not finished yet? "
" Yes, I'm there"
From Peter's and Bennet's view of the building, it was the best place for Tyler to hideout. The side that faced them was fitted with glass window from the bottom to the top and with the sun shinning at nearly it's peak in the sky, it reflected every ray. The reflection were so much that no one could tell even when a snipers lense reflected out of one window. It was like shinning a bright torch into a mirror with the reflection shining onto your eyes and trying to pinpoint a specific spot.
With a countdown, this started to become a reality to the three men.
Tyler fired the first shot into the hood of the first car making the engine nearly blow up. The car came into an immediate halt followed by the others behind it including the one Bennet was in together with Tyler.
"Shots fired! Shots fired!"
That was the first distress call that was made to the rest of the team. When the two occupants were about to exit, Tyler started raining down bullets on the doors of the car and onto the dashboard of the car making them retreat to the backseat of the car too scared to walk out of the car without any cover.
"Five minutes on the clock" Bennet told Peter as they set their stopwatches.
"We need cover!!!" The two guards in the first car called out through the radio. This was Peter's cue. He drove the car to the front of the van such that it was between the van and the first car and parked it sideways. Bennet and Peter crawled out of the car and since they knew where Tyler was , started firing at the building on the floor higher than where Tyler was giving the impression that they were providing cover fire.
Tyler ceased fire for a second as he changed magazines into the normal sized bullets. This momentary moment of silence from Tyler convinced the guards in the front that they had enough cover to crawl out and also start firing at the building. They got out and started firing as Bennet shouted instructions to them.
"Cover us!" Bennet shouted as he went into the trunk of their car and pulled out their assault rifles, handing one out to Peter.
Meanwhile the two guards in the van just sat there not knowing what to do. Peter knew that they needed those two guys out of the van in order to get away with the van. After a quick thought, he shouted to the men,
"What the hell are you doing inside there? Get out here and help us!!!"
While he said this, Bennet was busy shooting and giving the other two guards directions to shoot on the floors that he knew very well that Tyler wasn't on. The rays of the sun had masked Tyler's scope and his position.
Instinctively, the guards followed Bennet's command when they noticed that he had bigger firepower and it was as this point where they thought that this was the reason that the Mayor requested them to do the escort. They had clearly dressed for the part and were not playing the part.
The driver of the van, upon seeing what as happening outside decided to disobey Peter's command and shouted back to him,
"You take care of this and I'll drive the prisoner back to the prison"
Peter was furious. He didn't want to use brute force but at this point it was necessary. He knew that the only option was to go off the plan slightly since he time was running out fast.
"Tyler time is running out and I need you to flush those people out before the drive off from here" Peter said as he turned and took cover
When Tyler heard this, he now aimed for the van. The first bullet came through the windscreen and right through the drivers arm shattering his bones. The second guard jumped out of the van and took cover when he saw this. Peter went to the side and helped the driver get out and dragged him to the side.
Not a lot of cars were on the streets therefore there wasn't that much civilian presence on the roads. But all the shops that were along that avenue witnessed as all of this unfolded. Others ran for their lives while others recorded on their phones. A lot of commotion had ensued as the people wondered what to do. It was like a battleground outside the streets and no one dared to step out. Screams could be heard in the distance as the gunshots continued to rent the air.
It was an absolute hell on earth moment
