Chapter 16: Overnight Millionaires

 As soon as Marla left the office Athena turned her attention to Jason who was busy looking onto the files on his desk again.

"Hey you" she said. Jason raised his head and their eyes met for a brief second before he looked back at the documents and cleared his throat to respond.

"Hey," he responded

"What's up with you of late?" She asked 

"What do you mean?" He asked equally puzzled but his attention was still focused on the papers

"Well,for one...since the incident on Saturday morning you seem more interested in this case as compared to Friday" she responded

"Oh that. It took me a while to notice that the case that we are handling is not just any simple one. There's a lot at stake here" he responded

"What do you mean when you say that a lot is at stake?" She asked

"Uuhhhmmmm...I mean that," he started saying before his voiced trailed off and suddenly seemed to be thinking about something else

"Jason? Is everything alright?" She asked as soon as she saw his sudden change in expression

"Yes I am. What was I telling you about?" He asked as he cleared his thoughts

"You were telling me about what is at stake" she responded

"Oh that,you know what? Never mind about that. I read somewhere that LA Associates once defended the Mayor against some fraud allegations?" He asked

"Yes,but that was about six months ago. Why do you ask?" She enquired

"He gave you all his details including social security number and bank details to prove his innocence,didn't he?" Jason asked assuming Athena's question.

"Yes,where are you heading with this?" she asked

"If I'm not wrong he provided you with his bank password for you to access his bank statement. Do you still have it?" He asked

"Lemme check" she said as she pulled out a few files from her cabinet and shuffled through them before stopping at one file which she tossed to Jason. As Jason opened the file and was going through it Kayla walked in through the door with coffee in one hand an energy drink on the other. She put down the coffee on Athena's desk to which she thanked her and the energy drink on Jason's desk.

"Hey guys,I heard that you needed some refreshments and took the liberty of bringing them to you. I also didn't want to miss the new look in Athena's office. And Jason I know you didn't ask for anything but no one is supposed to work while their adrenaline is low so I got you an energy drink since I know you don't like coffee." She said

"That's very thoughtful of you, thank you" Jason responded

"Well I also brought you this original document and came to enquire on what I should do with the copy that you asked me to make" she said as she handed him the document

"Ooh yes,about that. I need you to send it to this address" he said as he wrote down an address and handed it to her

As she received the paper she read and reread the address but it didn't add up to her.

"Jason,I'm born and raised in Sin City and I can assure you no such address exists" she finally said as she looked at Athena in confusion

"Just hand it over like that to the delivery man. He'll know where to take it" he said

She shrugged her shoulders and went to exit the door as Athena thanked her for the coffee again. After Kayla left,Athena turned her attention to Jason once more

"Here it is" Jason said as he pulled out his laptop and placed it on the desk.

"Do you mind telling me what you want with the mayor's bank password? Its not as if he didn't change it already" She said

"Do you want to know a perp that comes with being a lawyer? You get to learn how people operate. So lesson one,if I'm not wrong the mayor hasn't changed his password since then. And if that happens to be the case then I should be able to access his account if I just input this password..." Jason said as he typed away at his laptop. Like a hacker, his fingers moved dexterously on his keyboard and after about ten seconds he leaned back and waited. Athena who was still seated at her chair was just able to watch him as she wondered what he was up to. After a few seconds his laptop beeped and she could see the excitement written all over his face.

"I'm in,can't imagine how lazy these politicians are that they can't remember to change their passwords." He said as he stared into the screen and was scrolling his mouse around. It was then that Athena realized what was happening.

"Did you just hack into the Mayor's bank account??? Do you know that that is illegal?" She asked him as she got up and went to check what he was doing.

"I wouldn't call it hacking persay,it's not hacking when you have the password. Call it more of a check in into his account" Jason said as he went on scrolling through his bank details while Athena stood beside him." Can you please check for me the amount of money our guy had at the time of his hearing " Jason told Athena. She picked up the file she had given him and after looking through some pages she found it

"It said that he had 20 million dollars in his account" she told Jason

"It seems like our Mayor had a steady flow of cash for the last four months" Jason said as he went through his bank statements

"Of course he had. I don't know what you are looking for but I'm sure you're looking in the wrong place" Athena said as she started heading back to her desk

"Wait a minute." Jason said which made Athena stop and come back to his side

"What now?" She asked 

"How do you explain this. The Mayor's steady flow of cash four months after his case puts him to have a balance amounting to 30 million dollars. But then things get interesting, how is it that the same person who accumulated 10 million dollars in four months suddenly accumulate 120 million in two months?" Jason asked her as he showed her the Mayor's current balance which was 150 million dollars.

"Wait!!! What?" Athena asked equally shocked

"It says here that he received the cash in two different transactions. One happened one month ago of 30 mil and the second one happened one week ago for 90 mil." Jason said as he dug deeper into the details." That's funny " he added

"What's wrong?" Athena asked

"Normally I'd be able see who sent the money but I can't see who sent this money" Jason said.

Immediately Athena's phone rang and as she answered it Jason tried to find our more info about the mysterious funds in the mayors account. When Athena ended the call she informed Jason that she had been called in to finalise the issues she had gone to check at the bank.

"Keep me updated will you?" She said

"I will" Jason responded as she left

He waited for her to close the door before he took out his phone and called Tyler.

"Is this line secured?" Tyler asked immediately he answered the call

"Yes it is,I'm not an amateur Tyler" Jason responded

"Good, so tell me. What makes you call me at this time of the day?" Tyler inquired

"Well,first of all I'd like to congratulate you on a work well done. I'm impressed, really. And I'm just glad you did not shoot anyone despite tearing those cars apart" Jason said amidst a chuckle in the end

"I'm insulted that you doubted my skills" Tyler responded

"I didn't doubt you at all.I'm just saying the work was impressively done. You have every security agent on edge wondering how such an attack was pulled off with such precision. Now secondly, I just sent you a document. I need you to find out who sent that huge sum of money to our dignified mayor." Jason said as he forwarded the details to Tyler.

"Okay,give me a second." Tyler said as he hacked the bank's database and retrieved the source of the money." Oh man! You will not believe this Jason " he said amidst shock

"Surprise me" Jason said with some sarcasm in his tone

"Jason, the money came from.....it came from State House. Your mystery sender is none other than the...." Tyler went on before Jason finished his statement

"President." Jason said
